Abstract
Un modèle de développement professionnel postulant une capacité continue d'évolution au fil des âges permet de caractériser le cap de la quarantaine comme une période d'essai de nouvelles lignes directrices. Le remodelage de l'identité professionnelle varie selon les classes sociales: réorganisation sans revirement majeur dans la classe moyenne, réduction aux directives imposées par le milieu dans la classe défavorisée, sélection radicale de lignes de conduite destinées à éviter l'échec dans la classe aisée. Sauf quelques cas d'exception, l'adulte de quarante ans évite toutefois de réviser les finalités de sa vie de travail. L'étude est basée sur un corpus de cent quatorze entrevues de travailleurs de la région de Québec.
