Abstract
Entre l'adoption de la Loi de l'assistance publique, en 1921, et les travaux de la Commission Castonguay-Nepveu, en 1966-1971, l'Église catholique s'est retirée des débats publics et de l'animation de l'assistance non institutionnelle à Montréal. Une étude de l'attitude du clergé face à la mise en place d'un réseau laïc d'assistance, chapeauté par la Fédération des Oeuvres de charité canadiennes-françaises (FOCCF), et face à l'éclosion du travail social professionnel permet de mieux comprendre une sécularisation ambiguë, le résultat de l'adaptation du clergé montréalais au changement social et d'un déplacement de son champ d'action, de l'institution vers la communauté.
