Getting Older and Closer: The Moderated Relationship of Job Insecurity and Facades of Conformity

Abstract
We contribute scholarly discourse associated with the wage labor relationship associated with capitalism, with a particular focus on the self-presentational choices members make in the workplace to cope with job insecurity. Specifically, we investigates the impact of job insecurity on the degree to which members erect facades of conformity (FOC) with moderation effects of age and the degree to which organization members have close relationships with others in the workplace. In two studies the results show that job insecurity is positively related to workers’ creating of FOC. The results from both studies also showed that age moderates the relationship between job insecurity and the creation of FOC, with the tendency of younger workers to create higher levels of FOC than older workers when job insecurity is high. Finally, there is a three-way interaction among job insecurity, age, and closeness with others on the creation of FOC; older workers with high levels of close relationships with others are less likely to create FOC when they experience high levels of job insecurity.
