Pendant les décennies 1940 et 1950, le Québec a expérimenté un régime d’hospitalisation où l’assurance privée se voyait confier une double mission : généraliser l’accès aux soins et soulager le malaise financier des hôpitaux. Ce texte retrace les succès de la première heure puis l’échec qui s’ensuivit. Il repose sur une lecture de l’histoire du système hospitalier de l’époque sous un éclairage particulier, celui du développement du marché des soins et, pourrait-on dire, de son éclatement en l’absence de mécanismes régulateurs adéquats, l’assurance privée n’ayant su jouer ce rôle.
