The Canadian Space Agency will continue funding the Earth‐observing satellite Radarsat‐1 through at least the end of the International Polar Year (IPY) in March 2009, Eos has learned. Rolf Mamen, director general of Space Operations at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) said that the agency was able to find funds to continue support for Radarsat‐1 for the next two years—a cost of less than CAN$10 million per year—and that the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat approved the program in October. Mamen noted that Radarsat‐1 “has been working well. It is more than meeting specifications,” despite some earlier predictions that the satellite might run out of fuel or otherwise fail.
