Abstract
In Senegal, French is the official language and Wolof is the de facto lingua franca. The current Wolofization phenomenon, in which non-ethnic Wolofs identify as ethnic Wolofs, is a function of how the French envisioned their “civilizing mission” and how colonized populations responded to French linguistic and cultural assimilation policies. This article contends that the French employed a technology of nationalism in the Four Communes (Saint-Louis, Gorée, Rufisque, and Dakar). Consequently, Senegambian ethnic and mixed racial populations undermined this technology and promoted the speaking of Wolof at the expense of French during the colonial period (1891–1960).
