De nombreux systèmes scolaires évaluent, par des épreuves ministérielles, la maîtrise de la langue des élèves à des moments charnières de leur scolarisation. Cet article se propose de décrire les épreuves utilisées à la fin du primaire (5 e ou 6 e année) dans six pays ou provinces francophones (France, Belgique, Suisse, Québec, Ontario et Nouveau-Brunswick) pour montrer ce qu’on y mesure réellement. Seront décrits la mise en place de ces épreuves, leurs objectifs, leur format, les sujets proposés, les critères d’évaluation et plus spécifiquement l’évaluation qui y est faite de l’orthographe. Les conclusions mettent en lumière la vision de la langue que véhiculent ces épreuves et la nature des informations sur la compétence à écrire des élèves qu’elles fournissent aux décideurs politiques.
