Abstract
L'analyse de l'oeuvre romanesque de Roger Lemelin révèle que la psychologie et le comportement de ses personnages s'effectuent à partir d'une thématique obsédante où le corps l'emporte toujours sur l'intellect. L'image privilégiée en est la jambe ou le pied. Cette symbolique, qui a une origine psychique facilement repérable à partir de ce que l'on sait de la vie de l'auteur, est surtout remarquable en ce qu'elle rejoint la réalité québécoise d'alors. Eue matérialisait en effet le « désir de pouvoir » des Québécois des années 1940 et 1950 de la seule manière qu'il leur était possible, à savoir par la force et l'agilité de leur corps. À une supériorité impossible par la tête, à cause d'une aliénation à plusieurs niveaux, restait « le mythe des jambes », hyperbole-hypostase de la puissance des muscles. C'est ce surgissement du corporel dans le littéraire qui a valu, selon nous, à l'oeuvre de Lemelin et à ses avatars médiatiques la faveur du public.
