L'ensemble du phénomène des associations au 19e siècle est plutôt méconnu, y compris celui des associations dites « littéraires ». Il y a évidemment dans ces microcosmes sociaux un objet intéressant l'histoire sociale. On ne connaît guère plus que l'existence de ces associations du type Institut Canadien, Union Catholique, Institut d'Artisans... Tout reste à faire pour analyser leur nombre, leur distribution chronologique et géographique, leurs activités, leur membership, leur impact et les raisons, au plan d'une morphologie historique de la culture, de leur apparition et de leur déclin. L'objet de la présente recherche est de proposer un modèle d'analyse du membership d'une association «littéraire» du 19e siècle en le construisant à partir d'un cas représentatif en termes de durée, de taille et de localisation, l'Institut Canadien de Longueuil. Si toutes les variables du modèle ne sont pas analysées pour l'Institut de Longueuil, elles sont à tout le moins mentionnées pour une application à d'autres cas.
