Abstract
Red cell substitutes: Heme proteins that bind oxygen also bind NO, so designing safe and effective heme-based transfusion alternatives that have low affinities for NO but bind O2 effectively for delivery remains a significant challenge. Here we show that NO scavenging by hemoglobin may be counteracted by the nitrite reductase activity of hemes in modified proteins.
