科学掘削で用いられるX線CTスキャナの目的は, 一般的な工業の場で用いられる場合とは異なり, 掘削 (コア取得) 作業そのものの品質管理にも用いられるほか, コア試料の品質管理, 地質構造の把握, コアー検層―地震波探査データの統合解析などの目的に利用されている。科学掘削におけるX線CTスキャナデータの利用は, 90年代はその利用が非常に稀であったが, ここ5年間で掘削直後から定常的に利用されるようにまでなってきた。
