Abstract
HE material presented in this report consists of the derivates of a T tetraploid hybrid between the two species C y r f a n f h u s parviflorus and Cyrtanthus Mackenii var.Cooperi.The diploid chromosome number is 2n=16 for both these species as for all other species studied in the genus (WILSENACH, 1963).The tetraploid hybrid (2n=32) was produced by colchicine treatment in 1952 (ISING, 1962).Triploids were later produced by pollinating this plant and its tetraploid progeny with pollen from diploid species or hybrids (ISING, 1966).Selfing of triploids and crosses between diploids, triploids and tetraploids gave rise to plants with aneuploid chromosome numbers.All chromosome numbers between 16 and 35 were observed in this study.The chromosomes of a trisomic plant 2n=17 are shown in Figure 1.It is seen from this figure that very clear karyotypic differences exist between different chromosome types.The five easily identifiable groups of chromosomes are symbolized by the following letters, which indicate both centromeric location and relative chromosome size:
