Abstract
En 1988, l’Office national du film lance une série de longs métrages intitulée « L’Américanité ». La définition de cette notion ne fait pas l’unanimité, particulièrement dans sa dimension « continentaliste » et dans son rapport à celle d’américanisation. L’analyse des films montre que les cinéastes n’en ont pas un entendement rigoureux et unanime. Si certains pensent que l’américanité sonne le glas de la recherche identitaire québécoise, d’autres estiment, au contraire, que cette problématique reste ouverte et actuelle. Les films de la série traitent donc de l’ici et de Tailleurs, des aspects et des modèles culturels américains que les Québécois intègrent ou qui les fascinent. Au moyen de films, l’américanité est mise en regard de la québécitude, de l’amérindianité, de la canadianité même. La série « L’Américanité » est finalement une contribution de première importance à la compréhension concrète d’une notion incertaine et paradoxale.
