Abstract
This exploration of the importance of design in scholarly publishing by Robert Tombs was originally presented as the introduction to a panel discussion on the same subject at the annual meeting of the Association of American University Presses in Toronto, Ontario, in 2001. Participants on the panel included George Mackie, RDI, freelance designer; Cameron Poulter, freelance designer; Henk van Assen, acting co-director of the Department of Graphic Design at Yale School of Art; and Jenny Armour, freelance designer.
