Abstract
Originaire d’un village de l’Hérault, près de Lodève, Paul Dardé (1888-1963) commence une vie paysanne avant de suivre les cours du soir de l’école des beaux-arts de Montpellier. Produisant très tôt des sculptures remarquées, ayant vu l’Italie grâce à une bourse attribuée à « l’élève le plus méritant », il est accueilli à Paris par Armand Dayot, directeur du journal L’art et les artistes. Il accède à la célébrité lorsqu’il reçoit, en 1920, le Prix national des arts. Délaissant la capitale, Dardé revendique la liberté de travailler dans son pays natal, où il entreprend la réalisation de plusieurs monuments aux morts. Ces œuvres, ignorées des Salons, expriment par des manières inattendues le tempérament contrasté de l’artiste.
