Abstract
Nous posons une question apparemment anodine, « Où est la Nouvelle-France », afin d’explorer le rapport complexe entre souveraineté et territorialité qui prévalait aux XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, et ce, des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. De nos jours, les historiens imaginent souvent une Nouvelle-France bornée, sans pour autant être d’accord sur ses frontières, qui varient au gré des imaginaires nationaux imposés au passé. Les cartes et récits contemporains, en revanche, sont moins enclins à tracer des frontières. L’expression « Nouvelle-France » désignait de façon foncièrement ambiguë des ambitions impériales illimitées. Elle constitue ainsi un cas extrême d’une tendance répandue à cette époque, avant que la souveraineté soit inscrite de façon précise dans le territoire.
