Né dans une famille enracinée dans le pays de Vannes, attachée à l’histoire, à la langue et à la religion, François Cadic poursuit des études supérieures à Paris avant de créer, à la fin des années 1890, l’oeuvre de la Paroisse bretonne de Paris pour venir en aide à ses compatriotes qui, de plus en plus nombreux, émigrent vers la capitale. Ayant baigné au cours de son enfance dans une culture populaire orale et bretonnante, il s’attache très tôt à en recueillir les témoignages. Une solide formation universitaire et une bonne connaissance des collectes et des collecteurs bretons l’incitent à s’engager dans la voie d’un mouvement folkloriste alors florissant, comme en témoigne sa collaboration à la revue Mélusine en 1894. Mais aussitôt il se démarque d’une approche qu’il juge trop savante et trop élitiste d’une culture populaire qu’il est, selon lui, essentiel de sauvegarder pour la maintenir vivante : conserver une conscience bretonne chez les Bretons de Paris, c’est, bien entendu, un moyen d’éviter un trop grand déracinement… et un abandon de la foi chrétienne. Chants et contes sont donc d’abord des moyens d’apostolat et la méthode de leur collecte et de leur édition ne relève pas d’une visée scientifique : elle n’est pas sans poser de problème, à l’exemple des contes et légendes confiés à François Cadic par soeur Marie-Louise de la Conception, de la congrégation des Filles de Jésus, qui en faisait un sujet de rédaction pour ses élèves… La part d’écriture et de réécriture est donc importante dans les publications de François Cadic, mais, paradoxalement, elle peut expliquer le succès qu’elles rencontrent encore aujourd’hui.
