Abstract This paper examines the use of mechanical torque and drag reduction tools for overcoming drillstring limitations encountered while drilling extended-reach wells in the Waterton area of Alberta, Canada. Three highly deviated new wells and two extended-reach horizontal re-entries were drilled using the tools. The paper summarizes the challenges of drilling wells in this area, the use of an engineering software system to optimally position the mechanical torque and drag reduction tools in the drillstring, and the results achieved.
