Résumé Le centre historique de Palerme a connu au lendemain du second conflit mondial un lent et inexorable processus de dévitalisation sous l’effet conjoint de son dépeuplement et de sa paupérisation. Sa requalification, engagée à l’initiative du maire de centre-gauche Leoluca Orlando, a commencé au début des années 1990. Si la réhabilitation des immeubles et des espaces publics constitue le coeur de cette politique de requalification urbaine, celle-ci poursuit également un objectif politique en voulant contribuer à la refondation d’une ville marquée par la mafia qui, aux yeux de Leoluca Orlando et d’une partie des élites locales qui l’accompagne, ne fait plus sens commun et a cessé d’être un creuset.
