Abstract
Le 2 décembre 1959, à l’occasion du 145 e anniversaire de la mort du marquis de Sade, l’artiste canadien Jean Benoît accomplit un cérémonial d’expiation au cours duquel il se marque symboliquement et physiquement au fer rouge du nom de Sade. Cet épisode se déroula à Paris, dans le cadre de la 8 e Exposition internationale du surréalisme. À partir de cet épisode, nous analysons la place imaginaire que le marquis de Sade tient dans le mouvement surréaliste et la spécificité de la performance théâtrale accomplie par Jean Benoît.
