Organisé en cercles concentriques hiérarchisés, le monde javanais trouve l’une de ses limites en montagne. Domaine du supra-humain (dieux, esprits) autant que de l’infra-humain (animaux et plantes sauvages), ces limites demandent à être abordées avec précaution, par une négociation permanente avec les forces qui y vivent. Cette conception holistique de la place de l’homme dans le monde tend à se voir contestée par un double mouvement puissant en Indonésie depuis une trentaine d’années, mêlant islamisation et modernisation. Ce processus transforme la notion de frontière entre humain et non-humain, tant sur le plan symbolique et intellectuel que sur le plan des pratiques spatiales. Des savoirs et savoir-faire métis semblent désormais dominer dans les diverses couches de la société ; leur confrontation provoque de très concrètes difficultés (aménagement et contrôle des territoires, accès aux ressources locales...), mais elle débouche également sur un renouvellement de la territorialité liée aux marges écouménales que sont la forêt et le cratère.
