Abstract
The first section of this paper reviews arguments for using Homer's epics to illuminate archaic Greek society. In Section I, aspects of ‘Homeric political economy’ are sketched with a focus on money. Section II poses the question of the origin of money. A critique of Carl Menger's account of the origin of money and his brief discussion of Homer is offered, after which the work of Bernhard Laum is examined. Laum, an adherent of the ‘state’ or ‘chartalist’ theory of money, argues that the origins of money in the ancient Greek world lie in the sacred sphere.
