L’évolution du discours et de l’action sociale des oblats de Marie Immaculée au Chili entre 1948 et 1990 a été marquée par cinq moments particuliers: l’arrivée des oblats au Chili, le concile Vatican II, l’élection de Salvador Allende, la dictature d’Augusto Pinochet et la transition vers la démocratie. L’étude du contexte historique démontre que plus la contestation sociopolitique est forte dans le pays, plus la politisation des missionnaires est exacerbée. Si dans un premier temps, le conservatisme politique relatif du Chili va de pair avec une certaine orthodoxie de la mission, la période 1970-1973 marque une radicalisation de la vie politique chilienne qui mène à une politisation plus importante des missionnaires. La dictature freine cette politisation qui est par la suite faiblement relancée au moment de la transition vers la démocratie.
