L’ambiguïté du travestissement : La scénographie d’Alfred Pellan pour la production du Soir des rois

La rencontre entre le père Émile Legault, directeur des Compagnons de Saint Laurent et l’artiste peintre de renommée mondiale Alfred Pellan mènera à la réalisation d’une flamboyante scénographie qui marqua l’histoire du théâtre au Québec : Le soir des rois de William Shakespeare (1946). Nous proposons donc d’analyser cette production, ainsi que sa reprise intitulée La nuit des rois (1968), à travers les costumes d’un seul personnage, celui de Viola. Ces derniers ne sont pas les plus spectaculaires qu’a dessinés Pellan mais ils demeurent particulièrement intéressants à étudier en raison de l’ambiguïté du travestissement du personnage qui se reflète non seulement dans le texte de Shakespeare et le jeu de l’actrice, mais également dans les choix du scénographe. Les vêtements du personnage se sont alors démarqués tant dans ses habits masculins que dans les toilettes féminines. La démarche de Pellan était alors profondément singulière et originale pour le Québec de l’époque. Du reste, les costumes de Viola permettent d’observer comment Pellan a transposé sa vision esthétique à un autre médium, c’est-à-dire, comment l’artiste peintre a adapté la scène théâtrale en un tableau vivant. La comparaison entre la création et sa reprise permettra également de déterminer comment les deux productions ont influencé le théâtre canadien-français, puis québécois. Les toiles de fond et les costumes de Pellan ont toutefois pris une importance démesurée par rapport au reste de la production et sont désormais exposés dans les musées davantage comme des artefacts culturels et des œuvres picturales que comme des éléments d’une scénographie.
