We observe the methods he used to approach urological surgery, and how his procedures are the basis of ones' that are conducted today. METHODS Archives at the Royal Society of Medicine and Wellcome History of Medicine libraries were searched for publications and records relating to the life and surgical achievements of Mathieu Jaboulay. Obituaries and correspondences were also used. RESULTS Mathieu Jaboulay was born in Saint Genis Laval near the southern French city of Lyon. At the Lyon School of Medicine, he became an anatomy demonstrator and later head of department in 1886, a year after his M.D. He was awarded professeur agrege, a title given to laureates of a public examination in 1888, and in 1902, he was appointed as professor of clinical surgery in Lyon. He was known for his informative lectures about experimental surgery which had attracted many doctors and students of his day. Prominent students of his include Rene Leriche, who described Leriche's Syndrome, and Alexis Carrel, a Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology or Medicine for his accomplishments in vascular suturing techniques. He was known for his keen interest of achievements in surgical history and was revered by the people who knew him. He died tragically in a train accident in 1913, in Melun, France. Among his surgical accomplishments, Jaboulay first described side to side gastroduodenostomy; he also invented "Jaboulay's button", an alternative to sutures, for lateral intestinal anastamosis, and furthermore was the first to perform xenotransplantation using pig and goats' kidneys in humans. With respect to urological surgery, he first described excision eversion procedure for management of hydroceles, a technique that was later described by Karl Winkelmann, hence the Jaboulay's procedure, also referred to as the Winkelmann's method, in Germany. Other successors at the time include, E. Wyllys Andrews of Northwestern Medical University, who in 1908, introduced the less commonly used "bottle operation", involving complete eversion of the sac with a high anterior cord incision without use of sutures. CONCLUSIONS Mathieu Jaboulay, an innovator of his time, produced invaluable principles to surgery.
