Abstract
Résumé À Puno, petite ville péruvienne située sur les bords du lac Titicaca, la hiérarchie sociale semble renvoyer à une stratification immuable : Indiens, Cholos et Métis y sont distingués en fonction de critères qui renvoient moins au phénotype et à la langue qu’à une « échelle de prestige » liée à des qualités sociales hautement subjectives. Mais en 1954, ces groupes partagent cependant des attitudes tout à fait comparables en matière de famille, de religion et d’appréhension des relations sociales, ce qui témoigne de l’existence d’une « culture métisse » qui transcende les clivages de groupe. De plus, les critères de distinction entre les groupes sont tellement imprécis que la pratique de la hiérarchie sociale est dynamique, le statut n’étant jamais acquis par avance. Mais le fait que les groupes partagent les mêmes valeurs ne garantit pas l’intégration sociale ; bien au contraire, l’auteur prédit un avivement des tensions sociales autour de l’enjeu agraire.
