Abstract
En s’interrogeant sur ce qu’il appelle la « culture optique », l’auteur cherche à identifier certaines propriétés fondamentales du dispositif cinématographique, compte tenu de la nature particulière de l’illusion visuelle que ce dispositif propose au spectateur. Comme l’illustre l’exemple de la fantasmagorie, l’illusion créée par les dispositifs optiques du xix e siècle présente un caractère foncièrement contradictoire, qui met en doute les théories du dispositif cinématographique issues des années 1970. En embrassant le projet idéologique du siècle des Lumières, la théorie classique semble avoir fermé les yeux sur cet aspect dialectique de la culture optique, où résiderait pourtant le potentiel ludique et le pouvoir d’émerveillement du cinéma.
