Résumé Après de nombreux poèmes de jeunesse écrits dans un moule traditionnel, il semble que Saint-Denys Garneau découvre la poésie en même temps que le vers libre. Regards et Jeux dans l'espace présente des vers libres qui paraissent agressivement dépourvus de musicalité: le rythme boite avec ostentation, le vers donne l'impression de vouloir régler les charmes du lyrisme et demeurer volontairement au ras du prosaïsme. L'hypothèse exposée ici est que le vers libre de Garneau se définit par son opposition même au vers régulier, que le poète atteint la poésie en en brisant le rythme traditionnel, en la dépouillant de ses enjolivements métriques, en l'exposant à la vérité du prosaïsme.
