Abstract
La trilogie cinématographique des Fantomas (1964, 1965, 1967) dirigés par André Hunebelle est la seule des adaptations du « Génie du crime » à connaître encore, par la télévision, le succès populaire.À partir d’archives inédites, cette étude documente l’opposition entre Marcel Allain et la société Gaumont, principale productrice des films, que tranche un Tribunal. Situé dans les problématiques d’histoire culturelle des industries culturelles, l’article éclaire les mécanismes qui aboutissent, dans les années 1960, à la reformulation de l’univers créé à la Belle Époque par Pierre Souvestre et Marcel Allain.L’opposition entre le noir – le Fantômas initial –, et le bleu – celui qu’incarne, sous le latex, Jean Marais –, ne peut se réduire à une simple opposition entre l’écrit et l’écran. De cette lutte commerciale, symbolique et juridique, seule la tyrannie du succès sort renforcée. C’est elle qui préside aux modifications profondes que subit le personnage, alors même qu’elle avait dessiné, dans les années 1910, les contours d’une œuvre différente, mais dont la genèse était tout autant soumise aux contraintes du marché.
