Mesoporous Ru- and RuSe-based catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells were prepared using an amorphous silica gel as a template. Impregnation with sucrose (carbon source), ruthenium(III)-chloride and selenium dioxide was employed to infiltrate the catalyst precursors in the mesopores of the template. After carbonization in argon and reduction in hydrogen atmosphere, the catalyst materials were liberated by dissolving the template framework with hydrofluoric acid. Nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used in order to investigate the structural properties of the prepared catalyst samples. The catalytic activity towards the reduction of oxygen was tested using the rotating-ring-disk-electrode technique. It was observed that RuSe-containing carbon samples possess a higher catalytic activity for oxygen reduction than Ru-containing carbon samples.
