Geoscientists throughout the world are preparing to celebrate the third annual Earth Science Week on 8–14 October. In 1999, geoscientists in all 50 of the United States, Australia, Canada, and at least 20 other countries organized Earth Science Week activities—field trips, demonstrations, lectures, exhibits, school visits, and open houses. The American Geological Institute (AGI) initiated Earth Science Week to provide an annual focal point for public education about the earth and its processes. Objectives for 2000 include increasing public access to information about local geology and fostering public awareness of the important contributions the earth sciences and geoscientists make.
