Abstract
Cet article examine les transformations de la rivière Saint-François (Québec) au XXe s., depuis la construction des infrastructures de régulation du débit du cours d’eau pour la production d’énergie hydro-électrique, jusqu’aux travaux de décontamination et de restauration pour promouvoir l’industrie récréo-touristique et protéger la biodiversité du milieu riverain. Nous considérons les transformations successives de la rivière Saint-François comme autant de tentatives d’inscrire dans le paysage riverain des relations harmonieuses entre l’homme et l’environnement. Cette approche nous permet de comprendre que les concepteurs de ces projets tendent à prendre pour acquis et à compartimenter le rôle des humains et de la nature dans la mise en forme de relations idéalisées, et que ce sont des contingences résultant de dynamiques écologiques et sociales négligées qui compromettent la réalisation de ces projets. À cet égard, tant pour la recherche historique que pour la pratique aménagiste, il demeure important de prendre en considération les contraintes exercées par les acteurs humains et non-humains dans la mise en forme de l’environnement.
