Le phytomanagement englobe les techniques de génie végétal dédiées à la protection et la dépollution des eaux et des sols. La fonction de protection est assurée par la gestion forestière des bassins d’alimentation des masses d’eaux, du point de vue sanitaire par le boisement de périmètres de captage, assorti de règles de bonnes pratiques sylvicoles. La ripisylve est un puissant filtre végétal où le sol joue un rôle important de fixation et de dissipation de polluants. Le rôle de la forêt linéaire est plus nuancé et dépend de la situation dans le bassin versant, de l’orientation et de la morphologie des structures boisées. La phytoremédiation, par tradition associée aux sites anthropiques — notamment industriels —, recouvre un ensemble de techniques de restauration de sols et de sites pollués, basées sur la fixation, la dégradation ou la concentration (préliminaire à l’exportation) de substances toxiques. Contrairement à la situation des États- Unis et du Canada, la plupart de ces techniques relèvent en Europe encore majoritairement de la recherche et ne sont pas encore opérationnelles.
