Ce texte analyse la part du territoire dans la régulation des sociétés à partir d’une approche basée sur le local. Il examine la place du local dans le préfordisme, le fordisme et le postfordisme. Le texte montre que le local a un rôle instituant comme conséquence de la crise de l’État-nation en tant qu’échelle unifiée de régulation sous le fordisme. L’espace local génère des identités, crée des liens sociaux et a un effet systémique, ce qui explique l’existence de trajectoires de régulation différenciées à l’intérieur d’une société. Ces trajectoires peuvent aussi innover en fonction de l’initiative locale des acteurs. Un modèle pour interpréter le rôle de l’initiative locale est proposé. Selon ce modèle, l’identité locale amène les acteurs socioéconomiques à construire des codes institutionnels spécifiques. Ceci explique l’existence de modes localisés de régulation imbriqués dans un système de régulation et de gouvernance global et multiscalaire.
