Trois objectifs ont guidé cet article. Nous allons d'abord tenter de dégager, à partir de la correspondance de Freud, ses représentations conscientes de la femme et les regarder dans le cadre des représentations de l'époque telles que les présentent des auteurs d'alors et des historiennes récentes, ce qui permet de situer Freud dans son temps, notamment par rapport aux médecins et à la bourgeoisie autrichienne et juive. En second lieu, à partir de certains rêves de Freud cités dans L'Interprétation des rêves et d'associations dont nous proposons quelques interprétations, nous tenterons de dégager également ses représentations inconscientes (ou imagos) de la femme. Enfin, en reprenant l'hypothèse de féministes psychanalystes contemporaines, nous regarderons comment les représentations inconscientes, elles-mêmes liées aux rapports sociaux de sexe, soutiennent les représentations conscientes, qui apparaissent dès lors comme des défenses vis-à-vis des premières, ce qui expliquerait, en partie, qu'elles perdurent.
