Abstract
Cet article vise à analyser les discours de doctrinaires coloniaux français et anglais concernant la politique indigène. Il étudie la façon dont l’idée de « mission civilisatrice » va, en France comme en Grande-Bretagne, laisser peu à peu la place à celle de développement, à un moment (les années 1930) où la « gouvernementalité » des colonies est repensée. Il montre dans quelle mesure cette idée de politique indigène cesse d’être un « droit d’exploitationv» et un « devoir de civilisation » pour emprunter une voie plus sociologique, malgré son caractère paternaliste.
