L’Empire espagnol n’ignorait pas l’idée de bien commun, associée à sa vocation providentielle. Comme forme juridique, la respublica christiana structurait en profondeur la société corporative des Indes de Castille. Lorsque survient la révolution libérale espagnole qui déclenche le processus d’indépendance en Nouvelle-Grenade (Colombie actuelle) et au Venezuela, ces corps républicains laissent place à des républiques unitaires composées de citoyens égaux. Il s’agit ici d’analyser les causes et les modalités de cette transformation, qui voit un ordre pluriel et corporatif se transformer en une souveraineté nationale. Le fédéralisme permit de traduire l’héritage agrégatif de l’Empire en langages et en pratiques modernes tandis que la dynamique guerrière tendit à centraliser le gouvernement et permit d’étayer la constitution d’une communauté nationale.
