Massimiliano Guareschi et Maurizio Guerri partent de la considération selon laquelle la guerre aujourd’hui semble de plus en plus un objet de refoulement de la part de la philosophie et des sciences sociales. Dans leur essai, les auteurs offrent une vision synoptique des principaux types de guerre, grâce à la présentation des différentes figures de guerrier qui ont peuplé l’histoire. En suivant la métamorphose du guerrier, nous comprenons que nous n’avons pas, au cours de l’histoire, assisté à une réduction progressive et linéaire de l’élément violent à l’intérieur des conflits armés. Seul un travail de reconstruction de la généalogie de la guerre occidentale peut nous permettre aujourd’hui de jeter une lumière nouvelle sur les lieux communs qui entourent les logiques sécuritaires, la représentation du terrorisme et l’idée que la guerre constituerait un instrument d’affirmation de la liberté et de la démocratie.
