La recherche dont il est question dans cet article a pour but d’étudier l’interaction entre l’enseignant et les étudiants dans la classe technique de danse contemporaine et d’approfondir ainsi la compréhension du mode pédagogique « démonstration-reproduction » traditionnellement utilisé dans l’enseignement de la danse. Nous avons, pour ce faire, réalisé une étude descriptive et comparative de cinq séquences sélectionnées à partir de l’observation de cinq classes de danse données par cinq professeurs expérimentés différents appartenant à deux institutions de formation préprofessionnelle en danse contemporaine à Montréal. L’entrée épistémologique et méthodologique de l’Analyse d’activité nous a permis de décrire et d’analyser les interactions entre l’enseignant et les étudiants en termes de préférences, d’associations et de couplages d’activités, et d’identifier en fin de compte différents styles d’enseignement. Nous avons alors été en mesure de faire ressortir à quelles conditions ce mode pédagogique pouvait favoriser un apprentissage sensible et constructif chez l’étudiant. L’imitation sera envisagée ici, d’une part, dans une perspective biologique, à partir des recherches neuroscientifiques sur les neurones miroirs, et, d’autre part, dans sa nature intentionnelle, telle que définie dans le courant socio-constructiviste.
