Abstract
Dans le vaste débat entourant la construction d'une culture québécoise plus ou moins homogène, la région du nord-ouest (Abitibi-Témiscamingue) présente des aspects originaux. Non pas qu'il faille douter de son appartenance au grand tout québécois mais plutôt qu'on doive préciser ses façons particulières de s'y rattacher. L'Abitibi-Témiscamingue offre à la période pionnière un visage hybride, métissé, caractérisé par sa proximité avec l'Ontario anglais et la diversité ethnique de ses populations fondatrices. Même si des liens multiples la rattachent au Québec méridional, elle éprouve dès le début des difficultés de communication avec le reste du Québec. Cette distance et le sentiment d'éloignement qui caractérise encore l'imaginaire témiscabitibien n'est donc pas que symbolique, il trouve son origine dans une lente évolution du rattachement physique au reste du Québec.
