Abstract
Si depuis le XVIe siècle, le phare de Cordouan règne sur l’embouchure de l’estuaire de la Gironde, il a été, quelques années au XXe siècle, éclipsé par une construction de béton gigantesque dominant la pointe de Grave au Verdon. Ce monument commémoratif rendait hommage à l’engagement des alliés américains aux côtés de la France en 1917 et saluait également le départ de La Fayette en 1777 pour les Amériques. La souscription lancée en 1919 pour financer ce projet est le point de départ d’un long processus, les travaux ne commençant qu’en 1926 et s’achevant en 1938. Conçu par le sculpteur Albert Bartholomé, il constitue une œuvre collective à laquelle participèrent l’architecte André Ventre et les sculpteurs Henri Navarre et Antoine Bourdelle. Le 30 juillet 1942, à peine quatre années après son inauguration, le monument est dynamité par les Allemands qui occupent le Médoc.
