Dserte la fin du VI e -dbut du VII e sicle devant la pression continue des incursions avaro-slaves, la ville de Byllis, fonde l'poque hellnistique au sommet d'une colline calcaire dominant la rive droite de la Vjosa (Aos), constitue un observatoire privilgi des bouleversements que connat le tissu urbain aux V e -VI e sicles apr. J.-C. Sige piscopal indpendant depuis le milieu du V e sicle, c'tait au VI e sicle l'une des villes les plus importantes de la province d'Epirus Nova. Ces deux sicles sont marqus par d'importants travaux de fortification au milieu du VI e sicle par l'architecte de Justinien Viktrinos, rduisant de deux tiers l'espace intra-muros (11 ha) et provoquant une modification notable du rseau viaire, et la construction de thermes, d'ateliers et de maisons, ainsi que de cinq basiliques, dont une cathdrale sur le flanc de laquelle se concentrent les btiments ncessaires la vie de l'vch, qui finit par administrer cette petite cit montagnarde (fig.
