Abstract
The Song of Songs inspired a variety of commentaries and literary responses by medieval Latin and German authors. There has been comparatively little study, however, of the late medieval commentaries written in German. MS Ger 44 at the Houghton Library contains such a piece of late medieval vernacular Song of Songs exegesis, the fifteenth-century monastic Hoheliedauslegung 'Meliora sunt ubera tua vino'. While this and other manuscripts stem from Southern Germany, there seems to have been a marked concentration of the textual tradition in Thuringia. Its three parts consist largely of catechetic compilations and exegetical meditations on topics central to monastic life and faith. The Latin verses from the Song of Songs cited at the beginning of many chapters provide the occasion for these compilations and meditations, rather than forming the basis for a systematic exegesis of the scriptural text.
