L’étude des manuscrits de théâtre ayant à peine entamé ses premières investigations et défini ses premières hypothèses de travail, l’article propose une série de réflexions de nature heuristique et épistémologique en vue de la possible mise en oeuvre d’une « génétique théâtrale ». S’appuyant sur un corpus de textes manuscrits issus de la préparation de spectacles du Théâtre du Soleil, l’auteur propose d’abord une taxinomie de ces textes puis s’interroge sur les conditions et les moyens, par le biais de cette écriture instrumentale, d’une analyse en amont de la représentation théâtrale. En tout dernier lieu, il envisage les perspectives qu’ouvrirait une telle étude, tant dans le domaine de la recherche génétique que dans celui de l’histoire des spectacles.
