Le premier jardin d'Anne Hébert est construit en partie comme un roman historique, dans la mesure où plusieurs passages fictionnalisent une tranche du passé. En étudiant les différents marqueurs de renonciation dans le roman, déictiques, procédés pragmatiques, choix historiques, il est possible de déceler l'idéologie qui a influencé l'auteure dans son écriture et plus spécifiquement dans son interprétation de l'Histoire. C'est ainsi que l'idéologie encodée dans la fiction commande les choix mémoriels de la protagoniste, Flora Fontanges, qui reconstitue certaines tranches de son passé individuel et collectif. Ses choix historiques et son interprétation des faits avérés relèvent avant tout d'une représentation moderne de l'Histoire qui commande une lecture signifiante pour le présent, le temps de la lecture.
