Abstract
IV drug Addiction is a potentially life limiting condition. It therefore meets the World Health Organisation definition of a Palliative Condition. Patients with IV drug addiction however are often marginalized by the health care system. Moreover, when patients are suffering from complications of their addiction, such as endocarditis, or from separate conditions, such as cancer, they are often denied adequate pain and symptom management. Such patients need and deserves the same pain and symptom management, psycho-social and spiritual support and advocacy as those with other life limiting conditions. By using the model of IV drug addiction as a potentially life limiting and therefore Palliative condition at our hospital, and involving the Palliative Care team in combination with appropriate medical and surgical treatment, and allied help support, we have been able to enhance the hospital experience for patients families and staff and improve outcome.
