Abstract
Un grand débat marque le système hospitalier québécois durant les années 1939 à 1960 : celui de l’accessibilité aux soins. L’Église catholique,principal maître d’oeuvre des services hospitaliers, privilégie alors la mise en place d’un régime d’assurances-hospitalisation obligatoire qui serait confié aux assureurs privés plutôt qu’à l’État. À ce jour, les historiens québécois ont fait peu de cas de l’activité des assureurs dans le champ de la santé. C’est en tenant compte de celle-ci que cet article entend jeter un éclairage nouveau sur la situation de l’Église dans le système hospitalier de même que sur ses prises deposition quant à la démocratisation de l’accès aux hôpitaux.
