Abstract
Cet article analyse la trajectoire évolutive de l’État et de la démocratie dans le contexte du passage de la modernité à la postmodernité. L’État moderne, comme le modèle de la démocratie représentative qui lui est associé, constituent des structures de médiation de l’activité sociale opérant la subordination des pratiques sociales particulières, concrètes, des acteurs. La société postmoderne invalide ce dispositif, car, en soumettant le politique à l’exigence incontournable de faire corps avec la société « réelle », elle fait éclater la puissance étatique au profit d’autorités plurielles et excentrées, en même temps qu’elle suscite l’émergence d’un nouveau modèle de démocratie, la démocratie fonctionnelle.
