Abstract The effect of phase holdup on reactor behaviour has been investigated so that a proper reactor for a continuous process for hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber can be developed. Detailed numerical analysis has been carried out, taking the coupling between the hydrogenation kinetics and reactor flow behaviours into account. The suitable liquid holdup and gas liquid mass transfer behaviour for the hydrogenation process of nitrile butadiene rubber are discussed, and the optimal reactor structure and operation conditions are suggested.
