Au cours des dernières années, le thème de la nature en ville a suscité beaucoup d'intérêt dans la littérature scientifique, notamment en ce qui a trait à la végétation des milieux urbains, et en particulier à la végétation qui colonise les espaces libres, tels les lots vacants, les friches industrielles et les emprises ferroviaires. On s'est notamment intéressé aux modes de dispersion des espèces, à leur origine et à leur répartition dans l'agglomération. Certains auteurs ont d'ailleurs comparé ces îlots de végétation à des « îles urbaines », en s'inspirant de la théorie des îles biogéographiques. Ces espaces verts isolés dans la ville constituent en quelque sorte des espaces insulaires soumis aux modes de dispersion et d'échanges biologiques qui s'apparentent à ceux de la végétation des îles océaniques isolées de la terre ferme, par exemple. Dans la perspective de la conservation et de la restauration des espaces libres, le concept de « corridor » ou « lien vert » apparaît comme une alternative intéressante, non seulement pour la réhabilitation de nouveaux espaces verts, mais aussi comme faisant partie d'un ensemble plus vaste formant ainsi la trame verte de l'agglomération. Cet article fait part des principaux thèmes abordés dans la littérature scientifique en regard des approches biogéographiques en écologie urbaine et dans l'aménagement des espaces verts en milieu urbain.
